چکیده

For a systematic assessment of submillimeter observing conditions at different sites, we constructed tipping radiometers to measure the broad band atmospheric transparency in the window around 350μm wavelength. The tippers were deployed on Maunakea, Hawaii, at the South Pole, and in the vicinity of Cerro Chajnantor in northern Chile. Identical instruments permit direct comparison of these sites. Observing conditions at the South Pole and in the Chajnantor area are better than on Maunakea. Simultaneous measurements with two tippers demonstrate conditions at the summit of Cerro Chajnantor are significantly better than on the Chajnantor plateau. Observing Conditions for Submillimeter Astronomy

Consistently superb observing conditions are crucial for achieving the scientific objectives of a telescope. Submillimeter astronomy is possible only at a few exceptionally dry sites, notably Mauna Kea, the Antarctic plateau, and the Chajnantor region in the high Andes east of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. Long term measurements of 225 GHz and 350μm atmospheric transparency demonstrat...

Infrared and Submillimeter Atmospheric Characteristics of High Antarctic Plateau Sites

The best ground-based astronomical sites in terms of telescope sensitivity at infrared and submillimeter wavelengths are located on the Antarctic Plateau, where high atmospheric transparency and low sky emission are obtained because of the extremely cold and dry air; these benefits are well characterized at the South Pole station. The relative advantages offered by three potentially superior si...

The summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the area near Cerro Chajnantor in Chile, and the South Pole are sites of large millimeter or submillimeter wavelength telescopes. We have placed 860 GHz sky brightness monitors at all three sites and present a comparative study of the measured submillimeter brightness due to atmospheric thermal emission. We report the stability of that quantity at each site. 1...

1 Alma Memo # 512 Atmospheric Transparency at Chajnantor : 1973 - 2003

Atmospheric conditions at Chajnantor have been monitored since April 1995. Starting then, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), joined by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), Onsala Space Observatory (OSO), and the Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO), have operated atmospheric and weather monitoring equipment to characterize the observing conditions for a large radio interferometer ...
